Troubleshooting NetSim VANET simulations with SUMO interfacing

1. Problem Definition:

Simulation in SUMO stops before the end time when simulated with NetSim

Solution:

Case 1:

This could happen if the departure time of the first vehicle in the trips file is greater than the simulation step length in the SUMO configuration file.
For eg: If the step length is 0.4 seconds and the first vehicle departure time is set to 1 second, there will be no vehicles in the SUMO network when NetSim attempts to access position coordinates and step the simulation.

or if the first vehicle leaves the network before the step length time.

starts only after the step lengh leaves the network at 0.5 seconds, however, the step length specified is 0.4 seconds. Therefore, during the first step, there will be no vehicles in SUMO, hence leading to the simulation ending in SUMO at 0.4 seconds itself.

Attached is a sumo configuration file with
a. The step length parameter was added.
b. osm.passenger.trips.xml is modified so that the first vehicle starts at the 0th second.
  • Add the <time> element manually in the SUMO configuration file by opening it in a text editor.
  • Save the changes and attempt to import the updated file in NetSim.
